Captain Christopher Pike is the second known Commanding Officer of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701. He took command from then Captain Robert T. April in 2250. Some years later, in 2263 he passed command of the ship over to Captain James T. Kirk, when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. While under his command, the crew compliment of the Enterprise was roughly 203 (less than half the amount that served under Kirk). Pike's first officer, whom he always referred to as "Number One" was one of the few women to achieve such a high rank in those days. However, Pike did not always think of her as such. His rapport with his first officer was one of professional friendship. Pike's second officer was a half-Vulcan, half-human science officer, named Spock, who would end up serving several more years aboard the Enterprise, as it's first officer.
Pike is noted for making First Contact with the natives of planet Talos IV, for which was recommended that General Order Seven be put into affect concerning the planet: any unauthorized visit or transmission to Talos IV would result in result in a General Court Martial with a maximum sentence of execution. In 2266, Pike suffered extreme radiation damage when a baffle plate ruptured on the reactor of the USS Republic, a class-J training vessel, on which he was serving as Fleet Captain.
In 2267, confined to a wheelchair and incapable of speech, Pike was returned to Talos IV, where, through the Talosians mental capabilities of illusion, he could live out his life normally. Pike was delivered to Talos IV through unorthodox methods, initiated by Commander Spock. Images to Starfleet from the Talosions lifted Spock & Pike from the consequences of General Order Seven, and Pike's stay was granted. |
