Gary Mitchell was a fine officer and a good friend to Captain Kirk, whom he met at Starfleet Academy. Kirk had enjoyed working with Mitchell so much, that he asked for him aboard his first command.
On Stardate 1312, Mitchell, serving aboard the Enterprise, was affected by an energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy, along with several other crewmembers—all of whom possessed ESP. As Gary had the highest Esper rating, he was affected the most, and began a transformation—gaining god-like powers. Unfortunately, he did not quite know how to handle all his powers, and he fell into the trap of the old saying, "Absolute power corrupts, absolutely." In the end, he was destroyed by his own power, with the assistance of Captain Kirk and a Dr. Elizabeth Dehner.
Captain Kirk recorded in his log that Mitchell gave his life in performance of his duty, because Mitchell had not asked for what happened to him.
