James Tiberius Kirk was born in Riverside, Iowa on the planet Earth in 2233. In 2246, at age 13, Kirk was one of nine surviving eyewitnesses on Tarsus IV able to identify Kodos The Executioner who massacred roughly half of the more than 8,000 colonists stationed there. 21 years later, when the Karidian Company of actors is touring, Kirk remained only one of two eyewitnesses who didn't meet an untimely end, when his daughter, Lenore Karidian, thought she could protect her father and wipe clean his sate by killing those who could identify him.

In 2250, Kirk entered Starfleet Academy, sponsored by a man named Mallory. While there, he befriends Ben Finney and serves aboard the USS Republic. Later that same year he would also befriend Gary Mitchell and have bouts with the scheming Finnegan. Two years later, while still at the Academy, he became romantically involved with a woman named Ruth, before he finally graduated in 2254.

Following graduation, Lieutenant Kirk was assigned to the USS Farragut, under the command of a Captain Garrovick. He commanded his first planetary survey that same year and befriended a native named Tyree.

It was in 2257, when Kirk would first encounter a "vampire cloud" which he felt responsible for not being able to destroy at the time, but would get is chance 11 years later.

In 2260, Kirk's second big romance came with a Dr. Carol Marcus, with whom he had a son a year later. In 2263, Kirk had yet another romance with a woman named Janet. The Following year, Kirk is assigned command of the Federation Starship USS Enterprise, which he takes on an historic five-year mission; after which Kirk receives a promotion to Admiral and Chief of Starfleet Operations.

In 2271, Kirk insists on commanding a refitted Enterprise to investigate a mysterious and dangerous cloud headed for Earth. Admiral Kirk continued to command the Enterprise for another 5 year mission, before returning to accept a position at Starfleet Academy.

In 2285, while supervising a training mission, Kirk was forced to again assume command of the Enterprise and face again Khan Noonien Singh, to keep him from exploiting the project called Genesis. Through this, he also had to deal with emotions coming up over seeing Carol Marcus and their son, David, for the first time in twenty-four years. The mission ultimately resulted in the loss of his closest friend and first officer of many years, Captain Spock. However upon learning that Spock's essence and soul survived in McCoy's mind, Kirk stole the condemned 20-year-old Enterprise to retrieve Spock's body from the new and now forbidden planet of Genesis. However in retrieving the body of his closest friend, Kirk loses his son to the hands of Klingons.

After three months on Vulcan, Kirk returns to Earth face the consequences of his illegal actions in the rescue of Captain Spock. En route, Kirk travels back to 20th century Earth and returns with two humpback whales to save 23rd century Earth from an alien probe trying to determine what had happened to the species. For his efforts, all charges against Kirk and his command crew were dropped, except for one. Kirk's punishment was to be demoted to Captain and given command of a new Starship Enterprise.

In 2293, while escorting Klingon Chancellor Gorkon to peace talks, Kirk along with McCoy were arrested and tried for his assassination. They were sentenced to the penal asteroid Rura Penthe. While working to prove their innocence, Spock and the Enterprise rescue Kirk and McCoy from Rura Penthe. After his rescue, Kirk then saves the life of Gorkon's daughter and successor, Azetbur, when an assassination attempt is made her life at the peace talks. Kirk retired following this mission.

Later that same year, after the Enterprise-A is decomissioned, Kirk attends the inauguration of the Enterprise-B, which is forced to undertake it's first mission prematurely, to rescue a pair of ships being destroyed by an anomaly called the Nexus. Trying to modify the ship's deflector dish, Kirk is apparently killed when the Nexus takes out a piece of the Enterprise's hull.

78 years later, Captain Jean-Luc Picard enters the Nexus and enlists Kirk's help to stop a Doctor Tolian Soren, whom the Enterprise-B and rescued at the Nexus, from destroying an inhabited system, just to get back into the Nexus. While Kirk and Picard succeed in stopping Soren, Kirk's life is again lost; this time for good.
