Dr. Elizabeth Dehner was a psychologist assigned to the Enterprise in 2265 to study crew reactions in emergency situations.
On Stardate 1312, Dehner was affected by an energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy, along with several other crewmembers—all of whom possessed ESP. As Dehner had the 2^nd highest Esper rating on board, she was affected quite highly, and within a couple of days began a transformation—gaining god-like powers. However, before she was completely succumbed by her powers, Captain Kirk appealed to her humanity and got her to assist him in overcoming Gary Mitchell, who was the most affected.
Captain Kirk recorded in his log that Dehner gave her life in performance of her duty, because Dehner had not asked for what happened to her.
